Barcelona has established itself as a leading technology hub. In addition to hosting some of the largest technology trade fairs in the world, like the MWC and the ISE, Barcelona is ranked 5th for generating the most startups in the world. And Catalonia as a whole has more than 140 technology hubs, with 22@ being the most outstanding.
Barcelona’s privileged position in the world rankings should come as no surprise as it is the result of certain key characteristics that have been developed over last 50 years. These include:
- Well-educated, diverse technology professionals trained at leading engineering schools.
- Pay in line with expertise
- A broad supplier base, driven by the automotive sector.
- Close public-private collaboration.
The battle to gain advantage in the technological arms race is of great geopolitical importance and is moving at breakneck speed. Global innovations such as AI and 3D printing are just some of the trends that are transforming the value chain as we know it.
To this end, the sector’s capacity for adaptation and change management are essential, as is a joint approach by the institutions in order to provide the necessary framework for the development and implementation of emerging technologies.
In the face of all these changes, Barcelona has what it needs to remain a benchmark and to continue to attract investment from both startups and large well-established multinationals in the sector, providing a wealth of talent skilled in all the technological disciplines. The city faces several challenges, however. Some of them are common to the industry as a whole, but others relate to the city itself. The city needs to:
- Empower SMEs with technology: SMEs must be urged to digitalize so that they can adapt to the new paradigm. Ensuring that small and medium-sized enterprises are equipped with these technologies will enable them to make the changes crucial for growth.
- Promote diversity in technology companies: a wide range of talents of different genders, ages, and backgrounds should be promoted. This means not only employing more women, but also recruiting talent with training in sociology, language and anthropology, etc. Today's technological challenges require an open mind and considerable curiosity, so it is now more necessary than ever to bring together a wide range of professionals from all skill areas.
- Improve connectivity in the city: one of the main ways of attracting and retaining businesses is connectivity. More and more network power is needed in order to drive new innovations. Barcelona must invest in improving its digital infrastructure in order to ensure fast and reliable connectivity.
- Encourage public-private collaboration Although this has always been one of the city’s strengths, certain projects, such as the deployment of 5G, have revealed some limitations to the current relationship. The city must continue to develop relationships with the private sector in order to drive future growth and innovation.
- Raise awareness of the social, ethical and ecological impact of technology: Sustainability is no longer a key selling point, but an indispensable requirement for any company’s strategic plan. Technological advances must also mean democratizing resources, reducing the digital divide, and helping to create a more sustainable world.
The world is paying close attention to Barcelona as it has the talent and the potential to remain at the forefront of technological development and innovation.
Continuous effort is needed, however, from strengthening education to fostering curiosity, while always keeping in mind the common good. In a world defined by rapid technological change, human values are essential in the digital world. And professionals in this sector must remember that innovations are designed to generate a positive impact on society as a whole.
