Cultural Regatta: from Barcelona to the world

To mark the arrival of America’s Cup, the world’s premier sailing event, Barcelona will be putting on more than 200 activities to prompt locals to get involved and to promote the city's culture and traditions.

Dubbed the Cultural Regatta, the program will offer both locals and international visitors a series of activities complementing the regatta itself.

One of the aims of the program—a series of concerts, exhibitions, workshops, exhibitions, and tastings, as well as sports, science-related, and leisure activities—is to showcase Barcelona and Catalonia to the world.

Barcelona's essence

A total of 200 activities will be taking place in key city locations, including libraries and museums, which will act as a cultural showcase for everything related to sailing in Barcelona.

The Barcelona Maritime Museum, for example, will be holding several exhibitions on the technology and innovations behind the regattas, the work and dreams of women sailors; and the tradition of sailing in Catalonia. These include:

  • “Competir en el mar: las regatas de vela en Cataluña”. An exhibition on regattas in Catalonia. From June to December.
  • Presentation of the book Bucked in the Yarn by Terry Stevenson, on 29 of August.
  • Series of talks on sailing “Una copa per la Copa”, , September and October.

Open Vela

In addition to the cultural program, from July 15 until July 20 the Spanish Championship for inclusive and adapted sailing, will also be taking place in Catalonia for the first time, the Kakapo Open Race ,from which sixty sailors will be taking part.

Inspired by the Kakapo, a flightless parrot found in New Zealand, the organizers are seeking to promote the sport of sailing to all groups, and to show the world that inclusion is possible, fair, and necessary.
