Additionally, sustainability should play a crucial role in the city’s development, maintaining a balance between innovation and the preservation of the environment and the city's cultural heritage.

With which city would you compare Barcelona to?

Barcelona is a unique city because it blends its rich cultural heritage with a constant spirit of innovation and international projection. Although it may resemble cities like Amsterdam in some aspects, with its focus on green mobility, or Berlin, with its vibrant cultural scene, Barcelona maintains its own identity, traditional in its customs yet cosmopolitan and avant-garde.

What model of city do you think Barcelona should be like?

Barcelona could look to cities like Boston, Cambridge, and Copenhagen, which excel at fostering scientific innovation through public-private collaboration. Like Barcelona, Boston has a unique combination of renowned academic institutions and hospitals that it has successfully leveraged to attract investment and specialized talent in the life sciences sector.

What is the main challenge Barcelona must address in the coming years?

The main challenge is to improve collaboration between the public and private sectors, particularly in the healthcare field, by streamlining bureaucratic processes and promoting the use of advanced technologies in the public health system. Furthermore, data sharing between public and private entities should be facilitated to speed up research and advance personalized medicine.

What do you think should be the role of the new generations and their involvement in the development of the city?

New generations must drive innovative projects, invest in education, and create new forms of participation through public-private collaboration. They should also play an active role in the transition toward a more sustainable and equitable city model.

What business sectors do you think Barcelona needs to focus on?

Barcelona should focus on the life sciences and health sectors. It is not enough to be admired internationally; it is also important that those of us who live here feel that we are part of that progress. I aspire to a city that grows with balance, where its inhabitants can enjoy a better quality of life while we continue to be a global reference.

With which city would you compare Barcelona to?

Barcelona has a unique idiosyncrasy that makes it difficult to compare directly with other cities. Its mix of history, Mediterranean culture and innovative spirit gives it an identity of its own that is recognized worldwide. However, in certain aspects we can see echoes of other European cities such as Lisbon, for its housing challenges and coastal character; Berlin, for its ability to attract international talent and innovate; or Amsterdam, for its focus on sustainability and urban mobility. Even so, Barcelona remains incomparable in its essence and character.

What model of city do you think Barcelona should be like?

We can draw inspiration from cities such as Copenhagen or Amsterdam for their focus on sustainable mobility, quality of life and integration of green spaces. At the same time, it is essential that Barcelona respects its identity and addresses its specific needs, balancing innovation, sustainability and citizen well-being.

What is the main challenge that Barcelona needs to face in the coming years?

Housing and tourism are two of the main challenges facing Barcelona. It is essential that policies seek a balance between economic growth and quality of life for citizens, to avoid “dying of success”. Although both are complex problems, coordinated management is key to ensuring sustainability and urban well-being.

What do you think should be the role of the new generations and their involvement in the development of the city?

The new generations must play a fundamental role in the development of Barcelona. We have the power and responsibility to shape the future of the city, and our involvement is key to ensure a sustainable and inclusive evolution. It is not just a matter of being given a voice, but of being actively involved in the decision-making and co-creation processes that will define the course of Barcelona.

Our ability to innovate, our open vision and our passion for change are essential to keep Barcelona as a global benchmark city. We bring not only energy and creativity, but also a sensitivity to current challenges such as climate change, sustainable mobility and social equity. It is our responsibility to offer innovative solutions to these challenges, and it is the task of previous generations to provide us with the tools and spaces to do so.

What business sectors do you think Barcelona needs to focus on?

Culture is the core of Barcelona, where our true identity resides. It is not just another sector, but the space where the city evolves, reflecting its social diversity. Culture plays a fundamental role in social cohesion and inclusion, creating meeting spaces that show the richness of our diversity. A good example is the Audiovisual Cluster of Catalonia, which integrates creativity and technological innovation, and has allowed Barcelona to position itself as a benchmark in audiovisual production.

Promoting sectors such as this not only strengthens our global competitiveness, but also reaffirms culture as a fundamental pillar of our essence, bringing society together and celebrating the diversity that defines us.

If you want to know the latest English news about Barcelona and the people who bring it to life, sign up to our Blog.

@BarcelonaGlobal

Barcelona 2040

Barcelona

Emprendimiento

smart city

Talento

What do you expect from the Barcelona of 2040?

With which city would you compare Barcelona to?

What model of city do you think Barcelona should be like?

What is the main challenge that Barcelona needs to face in the coming years?

What do you think should be the role of the new generations and their involvement in the development of the city?

What business sectors do you think Barcelona needs to focus on?

If you want to know the latest English news about Barcelona and the people who bring it to life, sign up to our Blog.

@BarcelonaGlobal

Barcelona 2040

Barcelona

Emprendimiento

smart city

Talento

Innovation Manager at the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) Urban Mobility.

What do you expect from the Barcelona of 2040?

I hope it will be a city that offers a high quality of life, going beyond the beach and good weather. I hope that Barcelona will be a city that can offer its citizens quality opportunities (economic, cultural, housing, etc.), that offers healthy public spaces and facilities, that continues to innovate in key sectors without losing sight of its identity, and that it can offer a model of a city that can serve as an inspiration to other cities around the world.

With which city would you compare Barcelona to?

It's difficult to choose just one. Lisbon, despite the population differences, has certain similarities with Barcelona: a coastal city with a competitive innovation ecosystem. The two cities have shared challenges such as housing and the impact of tourism. And lately, especially since the end of the confinement, both Barcelona and Lisbon have experienced a notable increase in the ‘expat’ phenomenon.

What model of city do you think Barcelona should be like?

Barcelona's city model is a world reference in itself. Especially in the field of urban planning and mobility. Even so, it is essential to incorporate a metropolitan vision in order to be able to provide effective solutions to the problems we have, as Greater London or Grand Paris are trying to do. In the case of Paris, the Grand Paris Express is currently being implemented, which will result in 200 km of new metro lines serving the cities surrounding Paris, which will undoubtedly have a major economic and social impact on the entire region.

What is the main challenge that Barcelona needs to face in the coming years?

As in many European cities and urban environments, housing is one of the main challenges we face. And personally, I think it is difficult to find a solution without a metropolitan vision. Barcelona's functional area is much larger than its municipal boundaries. Therefore, we must propose metropolitan solutions to the housing problem and complement them with a powerful public transport network that facilitates mobility between the different centres of activity in the metropolitan area.

What do you think should be the role of the new generations and their involvement in the development of the city?

Cities are made up of their citizens, and in this sense, it is important that we all get involved in the ‘construction’ of our city. The new generations need to be active at different levels: from participating in organisations in our neighbourhoods that generate a sense of community and belonging, to informing ourselves about the city projects that are planned and identifying the existing channels of participation so that we can have our say. It is also important to ensure that newcomers can integrate and participate in the collective ‘construction’ of the city. In Barcelona today, approximately half of the population aged 25-39 is of foreign origin. Although it is true that some of them choose to live in a bubble, we need to involve them in the life of the city so that they too can actively contribute to the ‘construction’ of Barcelona.

What business sectors do you think Barcelona needs to focus on?

Barcelona must continue to promote the knowledge economy, research, health and medicine, as well as continuing its commitment to entrepreneurship. Barcelona must continue to position itself as one of the most competitive innovative ecosystems in Europe.

Barcelona boasts outstanding examples of architecture from several different periods, but unlike many other cities, it has also undergone major transformations that have resulted in innovative changes in the nature of the city.

With the architectural beauty of its historic monuments and the innovative spirit of its contemporary buildings, the city continues to captivate residents and visitors alike, but Barcelona is not only a city to admire; it is a source of inspiration for architects and designers from around the world.

Barcelona’s heritage

Now world-renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and innovative architecture, Barcelona has changed considerably over the centuries starting with the opening of Ferran Street in the early 19th century.

One of the most influential names was Ildefons Cerdà, whose subsequent developments and revolutionary vision left a permanent mark on the city's urban landscape towards the end of the century.

The so-called Cerdà Plan of 1859 was an ambitious design whose main objective was to modernize Barcelona in order to meet the challenges of population growth and industrialization. It introduced the innovative concept of the “block” system, an urban design that prioritizes efficiency, accessibility, and quality of life.

One of the most outstanding achievements of Cerdà's work was the creation of the famous Eixample district, now well-known for its wide avenues, green spaces, and similar-sized buildings. The design made it posible to accommodate urban growth and encourage mobility, and it has become a model for city planners around the world.

Later, Oriol Bohigas and others sought to improve living conditions with urban renewal projects designed to regenerate parts of the Ciutat Vella and even revitalize entire neighborhoods.

Under Bohigas, the city also opened up to the sea, a major transformation planned to coincide with the 1992 Olympic Games, enabling the city to modernize its infrastructure, build new sports facilities and introduce improvements in public transport. The renovation not only improved the quality of life for residents, but also endowed Barcelona with an international reputation allowing it to attract both tourists and investment. In addition, the event left a remarkable architectural legacy of works that remain symbols of the city to this day.

The challenges faced by Barcelona today

Despite the success of the Cerdà Plan, Barcelona now faces a number of challenges. Today’s concerns include urban sprawl, dense living conditions, lack of green spaces, and pressure on housing. The city is therefore currently reconfiguring its urban design in order to address major social and environmental challenges and cope with the climate emergency.

The main issues that the city needs to solve to include:

The need for natural solutions: Creating a pleasant environment in which to live and breathe. Increasing the number of trees within cities and encouraging sustainable mobility through the creation of green routes and infrastructures. Improving air quality and people’s health.

Repurposing: Maintaining the identity of the city by planning developments that preserve architectural heritage and repurpose available urban spaces.

Water management: Implementing strategies in order to maximize soil permeability and promote sustainable urban drainage systems that allow rainwater retention for watering plants and the soil. The design of public spaces must ensure sustainable management of the water cycle, which is essential for the future of the city.

Optimization of energy resources: Maximizing green spaces and shade in public spaces to creatie cooler and healthier urban environments and counteract global warming. Designing allotments in public spaces to enable local citizens to grow produce. Optimizing energy resources and promoting a more sustainable lifestyle.

Health and wellbeing: Creating an inclusive city that ensures the health and wellbeing of all its inhabitants regardless of gender, origin, age, or functional diversity.

Innovation as an engine of urban renewal

Although the block system of the Eixample is now considered an ideal framework for urban life, the Cerdà plan was initially rejected by the inhabitants of Barcelona. And it is true that the tram line along Diagonal Street was also rejected at first, but is now seen as indispensable by citizens.

Barcelona embraces innovation and change, there is nevertheless intense debate and internal controversy when it comes to innovative projects. Barcelona has had its highs and lows and its successes and failures, but it has always viewed city planning as an engine of change, thus demonstrating its ability to adapt to historical challenges with innovative solutions.

If you want to know the latest English news about Barcelona and the people who bring it to life, sign up to our Blog.

@BarcelonaGlobal

Barcelona 2040

Barcelona

Emprendimiento

smart city

Talento

What do you expect from the Barcelona of 2040?

With which city would you compare Barcelona to?

These include:

Well-educated, diverse technology professionals trained at leading engineering schools.

Pay in line with expertise

A broad supplier base, driven by the automotive sector.

Close public-private collaboration.

The battle to gain advantage in the technological arms race is of great geopolitical importance and is moving at breakneck speed. Global innovations such as AI and 3D printing are just some of the trends that are transforming the value chain as we know it.

To this end, the sector’s capacity for adaptation and change management are essential, as is a joint approach by the institutions in order to provide the necessary framework for the development and implementation of emerging technologies.

In the face of all these changes, Barcelona has what it needs to remain a benchmark and to continue to attract investment from both startups and large well-established multinationals in the sector, providing a wealth of talent skilled in all the technological disciplines. The city faces several challenges, however. Some of them are common to the industry as a whole, but others relate to the city itself. The city needs to:

Empower SMEs with technology: SMEs must be urged to digitalize so that they can adapt to the new paradigm. Ensuring that small and medium-sized enterprises are equipped with these technologies will enable them to make the changes crucial for growth.

Promote diversity in technology companies: a wide range of talents of different genders, ages, and backgrounds should be promoted. This means not only employing more women, but also recruiting talent with training in sociology, language and anthropology, etc. Today's technological challenges require an open mind and considerable curiosity, so it is now more necessary than ever to bring together a wide range of professionals from all skill areas.

Improve connectivity in the city: one of the main ways of attracting and retaining businesses is connectivity. More and more network power is needed in order to drive new innovations. Barcelona must invest in improving its digital infrastructure in order to ensure fast and reliable connectivity.

Encourage public-private collaboration Although this has always been one of the city’s strengths, certain projects, such as the deployment of 5G, have revealed some limitations to the current relationship. The city must continue to develop relationships with the private sector in order to drive future growth and innovation.

Raise awareness of the social, ethical and ecological impact of technology: Sustainability is no longer a key selling point, but an indispensable requirement for any company’s strategic plan. Technological advances must also mean democratizing resources, reducing the digital divide, and helping to create a more sustainable world.

The world is paying close attention to Barcelona as it has the talent and the potential to remain at the forefront of technological development and innovation.

Continuous effort is needed, however, from strengthening education to fostering curiosity, while always keeping in mind the common good. In a world defined by rapid technological change, human values are essential in the digital world. And professionals in this sector must remember that innovations are designed to generate a positive impact on society as a whole.

If you want to know the latest English news about Barcelona and the people who bring it to life, sign up to our Blog.

@BarcelonaGlobal

Barcelona 2040

Barcelona

Emprendimiento

smart city

Talento

Carles Alsina, CEO of Sabseg Group

What do you expect from the Barcelona of 2040?

My involvement in Barcelona Global’s leadership program Barcelona 2043 has given me the chance to think deeply about this question. Inspired by John F. Kennedy, who said famously “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” I suggest turning the question around and asking instead: What does the Barcelona of the 2040’s expect from you?

This rather different focus helps one to take an active, committed approach to the future of the city. To this end, I believe that young people should concentrate on the following four areas.

Love the city: It’s easy to love Barcelona, but the best initiatives require both reason and emotion. We must be able to transmit a love of Barcelona if we are to come up with really great initiatives.

Adaptation and flexibility to change: Major changes frequently involve a certain degree of resistance, so we need to need to develop an agile culture to make sure that initiatives do not get bogged down.

Social commitment:: There are already numerous city initiatives that are making a very positive impact on our environment. Doing our bit is one way to help build a better Barcelona.

Constructive thinking:: I believe that criticism, if channeled correctly, conveyed in a constructive manner, and stripped of any ideological connotations, is a powerful engine for change.

With which city would you compare Barcelona to?

I find it very difficult to compare Barcelona with other cities because it is so unique. It is really difficult to answer the question without alluding to its climate, culture, quality of life, architecture, location, and all the other things that make it so extraordinary. One way to approach the question might be to compare Barcelona with other cities based on numerical parameters such as GDP per capita or volume of tourism or investment, but that would produce a very bland result.

So I think the best way to compare Barcelona with other cities is to think in terms of how it makes one feel. Although I can’t really explain it logically and Sydney is a very long way away from Barcelona, it is where I felt most at home.

What model of city do you think Barcelona should be like?

Barcelona should make sure that all sectors in the city should have the necessary resources to enable them to develop freely. One has to remember that a cosmopolitan, dynamic and creative city like Barcelona cannot only be concerned about the people who live in the center, important as they are, but also about all those who play a role in the city: those who live nearby, those who are here temporarily, and those visit the city to work, etc.).

If we want Barcelona to retain its essence, we cannot rely on any one single model; we need to get the best out of those that have been tried and tested. In this respect, I am inspired by Gaudi, who said that: "Originality consists in returning to the origin; therefore, what is original is that which returns to the simplicity of the first solutions".

What is the main challenge that Barcelona needs to face in the coming years?

Barcelona, like any large city, faces many major challenges. However, as with many cities around the world, one of the main challenges, one which especially affects the younger generations and has a huge impact on the quality of life of all its inhabitants, is accessibility to affordable housing.

There are certain local circumstances that affect housing in Barcelona, such as limits on space, but setting those aside, I think it is up to all of us to reflect on what we should ask the public authorities to do in order to resolve a problem that affects us all.

In my opinion, there is no magic formula, but I do think we should rethink some of the current measures, as they seem to have the opposite effect of that intended and reduce the supply of housing available on the market.

What do you think should be the role of the new generations and their involvement in the development of the city?

I believe that young people play an essential role in the development of the city, but we shouldn’t ignore those with more experience. They offer us valuable insights that provide a launchpad and help us to set our sights on the future.

Young people need to be encouraged to become more deeply involved in society and brought into city decision-making. Barcelona Global, which runs specific programs for young people like Barcelona 2043, are a step in the right direction.

What business sectors do you think Barcelona needs to focus on?

The current trend is to transform large cities into business knowledge hubs that specialize in certain areas, like IT, AI, sports, and so on, but I am cautious about defining just one single area that would be right for Barcelona. Actually, I believe that the value and attractiveness of Barcelona lies in the fact that it is a city capable of embracing different business sectors.

To clarify, I confess that I find it difficult to choose between the different dishes on a menu, so I love going out for tapas with friends and being able to try a wide variety of extraordinary dishes. What makes a good tapas restaurant exceptional, however, is not only the uniqueness of each dish, but the overall balance. So I sign off with a question: What can we do to turn Barcelona into the best tapas city, the one with the best balance of all the different flavors?

which did an enormous amount to breathe new life into the city, Barcelona has become a leading tourist destination Tourism is one of the city’s strategic sectors, and accounts for some 15% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In order to ensure that Barcelona remains among the most attractive cities in the world, we must meet a number of challenges:

Understanding the tourist: First of all, it is essential to understand what kind of tourists visit us, what they are looking for, and what expectations they have. The city’s wide range of attractions appeal to a number of different groups, who come to the city for numerous reasons, including cultural events, congresses, medical treatment, and sports events.

Decentralization: Diversity in the kind of accommodation is essential, but it is also necessary to open new hotels outside the city center.

A new model: Public-private partnerships and a loosening of regulations should enable both traditional and alternative forms of accommodation to be offered both in the center and on the outskirts.

Sustainability: To please both tourists and residents, it is necessary to encourage responsible, sustainable growth. Planning for the tourism sector must take into account the welfare of the local population and long-term sustainability.

If we want to tourism to be sustainable, we have to encourage high-quality tourism that promotes the potential of all neighborhoods. One way of doing so is to connect the tourist bus to all areas of the city.

We cannot forget that tourism has an impact on the environment and on local inhabitants, so it is essential to make a strong commitment both to the environment and the community.

We are already committed to renewable energies and the implementation of measures to save resources, but what more can be done? One way is to encourage certification and labeling in hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions to inform visitors about responsible practices.

To improve the impact on the community, collaboration with small and medium-sized local businesses and other bodies should be encouraged to promote the local economy and reduce dependence on large international chains.

Tourism = talent: Attracting talent is another significant challenge. Stakeholders must work together to make Barcelona a place that is conducive to professional development, innovation, and the growth of new industries. Following the pandemic, the city must now regain its attractiveness as a place to work. This means finding ways to attract the best professionals to a sector that has a considerable impact on the local economy.

A key role is played by tourism and business schools. Tourism-related studies should not only be about "face-to-face" contact with the customer; they should also address broader aspects, such as digitalization, innovation, and sustainability.

These challenges can be met if all stakeholders pursue a more sustainable tourism model, one that ensures Barcelona’s position at the top of the rankings by encouraging economic growth, the preservation of the environment, and the promotion of local culture.

If you want to know the latest English news about Barcelona and the people who bring it to life, sign up to our Blog.
