Lydia Iracheta, Founder & CEO of Sobremesa.Institute, the unconventional Spanish school.

What is Sobremesa.Institute?

Our Spanish Program offers a unique blend of online courses and exclusive linguistic immersions creating a two-way flow that provides a high-quality, modern, approach to language learning; while offering a glimpse into Barcelona’s vibrant and multifaceted creative community and the warm essence of our Mediterranean culture. It’s not just about learning; it's about experiencing.

When was it founded?

The launch of Sobremesa.Institute was on March 24, 2023.

What do you like most about your work?

I set out to develop a project that would transmit my values and beliefs, and Sobremesa.Institute is the place where all the things I care for come together.

I love my work and being a connector! Creating those special moments where people and creativity collide and spark beautiful conversations. I’m really happy balancing my profession between the digital realm and the real world.

And what do you like least?

I am positive, and creative, with a good sense of humor. For me, there's really no room for frustrations in my playbook!

What do you think your entity stands out for?

In a rapidly changing world, we stay at the forefront of language education: a one-of-a-kind, interdisciplinary approach to language learning. We don’t just follow the path – we create our own.

From our name, the term 'Sobremesa' is a declaration of love for our Mediterranean heritage, while we believe that ‘Institute’ best conveys the ideas of equality and community behind our vision. We’ve redefined the concept of language school and every aspect of Sobremesa.Institute embodies passion – for people, culture, quality, and the planet.

What is your main challenge?

Currently, we are developing our Inspirational Immersions program. A language immersion that reframes the way we live and interact, inspiring new paradigms in travel and learning. Our focus is on a more human-centric approach which encourages slowing down, and lasting connections with the community.

Where is your company located?

Sobremesa.Institute is located in the central El Raval neighbourhood, on a street that is part of the so-called 'Little Eixample'. Our building has long been linked to the city's creative community, hosting offices of renowned creatives like illustrator Jordi Lavanda and the architecture studio BIG.

What do you like the most about the neighborhood where you work?

Working in the center of Barcelona is inspiring, especially due to the presence of key cultural spaces such as the MACBA, the CCCB, La Virreina, and the Angels Barcelona gallery in our building.

How important is Barcelona for your company?

Barcelona has shaped the vision and values of Sobremesa.Institute, turning it into much more than a Spanish school; it's a place where we celebrate and share the essence of Mediterranean life. We reflect in every aspect of our work the passion and love for its rich culture and vibrant lifestyle.

With which city would you compare Barcelona to?

Barcelona is unique and incomparable.

What model of city do you think Barcelona should be like?

Berlin, a city that fosters entrepreneurship, creativity, and the concept of 'slowing down'. Berlin has achieved a perfect balance: it is a center of technological, artistic, and cultural innovation in an environment where people can experiment and develop at a more human pace.

What best practices from other cities would you like Barcelona to adopt??

All cities should adapt to the needs of their inhabitants, and in my opinion, Barcelona could greatly benefit from adopting practices from cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen, which are leaders in sustainability and urban quality of life: integration of green areas, promotion of efficient public transportation, and construction of infrastructure that supports a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

What would you ask of the Barcelona of the future?

Creativity! Let it be a city that inspires people to feel, think, and act.

Amanda Hughes, Headteacher of Oak House School

What is Oak House School?

Oak House School (OHS) is a private co-educational day school with students aged 3-18 years old. OHS is a British school from Nursery - Year 7 and then we move into the national curriculum for ESO. However, the students also take the iGCSE exams which are the compulsory exams in the UK at the end of ESO 4. At Post-16 the students can either take the Bachillerato or the IB Diploma Program in English

When was it founded? When did you start working in the company?

The school was founded in 1968 by a group of families who wanted their children to learn in an international setting and to become fluent in other languages. In 1989 the school became a charitable foundation and since then has been guided by this altruistic ethos. I have been working at OHS since September 2022.

What do you like most about your work?

Working alongside our students, staff, and families. It never ceases to amaze me how our students become multilingual and think that everyone speaks 3 or 4 languages. It’s not until they go to university that they realize how amazing they are. Our school team is constantly focused on learning and getting better over time, and this has such a positive impact on pupil progress.
Another wonderful element of our school is that the families are very involved in the learning process and support the school on a huge range of events.

And what do you like least?

It is always hard to see members of a community suffer either emotionally or socially and, post-pandemic, all schools are seeing more students with specific needs. In response to this we have created very strong student support and inclusion and wellbeing teams to help students, families and staff who face these challenges.

What do you think your entity stands out for?

OHS is “the school of futures” and this is created by our unique offer.
It is always difficult to define what makes a school special because it is a “feeling” that flows across the community. We say that our community should be safe, happy, and learning and this is what guides our work.

What is your main challenge?

We have a happy challenge in the school is full and want to maintain this, whilst constantly working to develop learning opportunities at every age and all our school services and provision.

Where is your entity located?

Sarrià

¿Sabes por qué se eligió esta ubicación?

There are several schools based in this education zone, so historically it would have been a suitable location with a large campus, beautiful views over the whole of Barcelona and great transport connections as well.

What do you like the most about the neighborhood where you work?

Our school is almost a “village school” as many of our students come from the local area and we are neighbors.

How important is Barcelona for your company?

Barcelona is the heart of our community because the school is creating the future citizens and leaders of Barcelona. It is very important that we remember this in our work.

With which city would you compare Barcelona to?

Barcelona has an incredible economy that combines all levels of industry alongside creative and technology hubs. To compare Barcelona with other cities does not do justice to the unique environment that we enjoy living here.

What would you ask of the Barcelona of the future?

Creativity! Let it be a city that inspires people to feel, think, and act.

Andrea Rodríguez Novoa and Mariña Álvarez, joint directors of Barcelona Gallery Weekend

What is Art Barcelona and what is the Barcelona Gallery Weekend?

Art Barcelona, a non-profit association of art galleries, has been promoting joint initiatives to publicize and support contemporary art since 1990. Its aim is to attract visitors to galleries and to encourage reflection and debate on contemporary culture.

One of the initiatives of Art Barcelona is the Barcelona Gallery Weekend, during which thirty galleries in Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and the Penedès region celebrate the start of the art year with a special program of exhibitions and activities aimed at all audiences.

When was Art Barcelona founded and when did you start to work there?

Art Barcelona was founded in 1990 and Barcelona Gallery Weekend is to be held for the 9th time in 2023. Mariña started to work as coordinator in BGW in 2018, when it was managed by Susanna Corchia. And in 2022 Andrea and Mariña became joint directors.

What do you like most about the job?

It's very enriching, both in terms of the art and on a human level.

The Art Barcelona team, which also coordinates Art Nou, a festival that highlights emerging local art, works very harmoniously, which is a great pleasure. And the program of public and general activities brings us into contact with a wide range of interesting people who all share the same interest in art. It is a great pleasure to be involved with Art Barcelona.

And what do you like least?

Maybe the more routine administrative work, but it’s all part of the job.

What is Barcelona Gallery Weekend particularly good at?

Barcelona Gallery Weekend offers a high-quality program of art that is designed to please anyone who is at all interested in art.

The intention of the weekend is to encourage the general public to discover contemporary art in the galleries, whose exhibitions are open to the public throughout the year. The idea is to raise awareness of the importance of galleries’ work as producers of culture and to encourage art collecting, which is not as expensive as one might imagine.

What is the main challenge of the initiative?

It seems like a contradiction in terms, but it may be that its main function—to encourage people not to be shy about entering galleries—is also its greatest challenge!

Where is the company located? Do you know why this location was chosen?

Art Barcelona is based in Barcelona and represents the interests of 37 art galleries that are members of the association. The galleries are located in Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, and Santa Margarida i els Monjos in the Penedès district.

The Barcelona Gallery Weekend event is open to all contemporary and avant-garde art galleries in Barcelona and the surrounding area. Following a call for entries each year between December and January, galleries interested in participating submit an exhibition proposal that is evaluated by a committee.

The general program includes exhibitions in the participating galleries—this year there will be 27, of which 21 are in Barcelona, 5 in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, and one in Santa Margarida i els Monjos. There are also numerous guided tours, guided visits, special visits for families, walks led by curators, meetings, talks, presentations, workshops, and other activities related to contemporary art.

What do you like best about the neighborhood where you work?

The association is based at HANGARa center for artistic research and creation located in the Can Ricart complex in the Poblenou, a highly dynamic and vibrant neighborhood.

As we have mentioned, the galleries that take part in the weekend are in different parts of the city (Eixample, Gràcia, Ciutat Vella, Sant Antoni) and the surrounding area (L'Hospitalet, in the Santa Eulàlia neighborhood, and Santa Margarida i els Monjos, in the Penedès). The location of our headquarters, galleries and other art spaces, together with the nature of our work, enables us to visit almost every part of Barcelona. We don't just love the neighborhood: we love the city!

How important is Barcelona for your company?

31 of the 37 associated galleries are based in Barcelona itself, as are 21 of the galleries participating in BGW2023

Barcelona is at the heart of our undertaking: Barcelona Gallery Weekend aims to strengthen and showcase the rich and varied artistic fabric of Barcelona, to promote local art collecting, and to highlight the work of galleries in the city and its surroundings, spaces that generate culture that are open to all.

BGW enables those on the local art scene to promote the art market. It does so by encouraging the involvement of the general public, collectors, professionals and representatives of local and foreign art institutions, and potential buyers and purchasers.

Which city would you compare Barcelona to?

Barcelona is a unique city with a personality of its own that is difficult to define. It is an international tourist center for a variety of reasons: the coast and the climate, of course, but also the range of culture on offer here. As far as art is concerned, Barcelona has a touch of Brussels perhaps, but also of Marseilles, and it has an open character that is very typical of the local people.

Which city model should Barcelona be aligned with?

Barcelona is a model in itself! In terms of urban planning, for example, it has been and continues to be both friendly and cultivated. We do not believe that it should follow a specific model, but should adapt to the needs of its inhabitants as well as its visitors.

What good practices from other cities would you like Barcelona to adopt?

Perhaps Amsterdam's detailed, pedestrian and cycle-friendly urban design. Barcelona has a scale and climate that makes it very walkable, which is not only environmentally sustainable but also healthier for an increasingly sedentary population.

With one or two exceptions, all the galleries taking part in the Barcelona Gallery Weeked can be visited on foot.

What do you ask of the Barcelona of the future?

I would urge it not to fall into decline. And I would encourage it to progress, but at its own pace.

Between 8 and 20 November, lovers of audiovisual art have enjoyed the 20th Loop Barcelona festival

The leading audiovisual festival, Loop Barcelona, celebrated its 20th anniversary this month. Throughout November, lovers of audiovisual art have been able to enjoy numerous exhibitions on an abstract theme: the notion of time. After the success of last year’s festival at Gaudí’s Casa Pedralbes, the Almanac Barcelona hotel hosted the Loop Fair this year.

A total of 43 works in all kinds of format—films, animations and virtual reality videos with novel formats and with a critical eye. Video formats and image development in new media such as 3D, motion capture, virtual reality and Artificial Intelligence all played their part. The inspiration for exhibitors was the phrase “As time goes by...' .

Some of the artists at the Loop Fair—Sigurður Guðjónsson, Lenora de Barros, and Marianna Simnett, among others—have consolidated their career in major international events such as the Venice Biennale or the Lyon festival. Award-winning artists from film festivals such as the Berlinale, Sundance, New York Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival and CPH:DOX were also present at the event.

Aiming high, the festival brought together no less than 350 creators and 40 curators in 72 spaces around Barcelona, the being to display Barcelona’s artistic community.

Itineraries and talks

Both Barcelona Gallery Weekend, an annual four-day event promoted by the Art Barcelona gallery association, and City Screen 2022 collaborated with this event. Thanks to the participation of galleries, organizations and groups, numerous guided itineraries were organized throughout Barcelona.

Furthermore, Loop Talks, a series of round tables and presentations on issues such as cinematographic practices, the ethics and practices of art collecting, and the potential of new digital technologies and their impact took place on 16 and 17 November.

The Loop, at the forefront of audiovisual art

The movement created in 2003 by Emilio Álvarez and Carlos Durán has been described as “one of the most important platforms for the production and exhibition of critical thinking generated by artists, who in most cases are supported by gallery owners and collectors”.

This event receives the support of various institutions and companies. They include the Catalan Institute of Cultural Companies, the Catalunya Government, the Barcelona City Council, Acción Cultural Española from the Ministry of Culture, the Ramon Llull institute, Almanac Barcelona hotel, La Vanguardia, and Estrella DAMM.

Opened in 2013, the Marc Domènech Gallery is a space for collectors that offers a range of smaller works which have been selected for more than just their economic value. Since the opening of the space, the gallery has sought to promote twentieth century art with rigour and professionalism, an approach that has enabled them to explore new paths and to stage new exhibitions that stimulate artists to create pieces for the gallery.

To do the same in Barcelona, Barcelona must view universities as "essential actors in the cultural life of the city," says Palacios. Faculties of Fine Arts should strengthen their links with commercial galleries and, like the Curation Society of the University of the Arts in London, put on cultural events that bring together gallery owners, institutions and students. This would help Barcelona enrich its local cultural fabric and generate more business opportunities in the visual arts sector.

Dr. Baselga’s dream was to end cancer and he dedicated his life to making his dream a reality. According to Dr. Baselga, “Diseases such as cancer or Alzheimer’s can only be defeated through research. Only science provides the right tools for understanding how they emerge and evolve, and which therapies are best suited to stopping them. The best means of making sure we don’t feel a shiver run down our spines when we hear the word “cancer” is to give support to biomedical research. He gave his life to research in order to improve our understanding of cancer and to identify its weaknesses so that patients would live longer and healthier lives.

Will you help to make Dr. Baselga’s dream come true? Please support research for a future without cancer.

Josep Baselga was born on July 3, 1959 in Barcelona into a family with a medical background. He studied medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and later trained as a specialist in internal medicine at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital, which is where he discovered his passion for oncology. After studying in New York, first at the County Hospital of Brooklyn and then, fulfilling a dream, at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), he returned to Barcelona, where he took the Oncology Department of the Vall d’Hebron Hospital to the forefront of oncological medicine. He sought to promote translational research in cancer, positioning Barcelona in the first division of the field of oncology. He also founded the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) and the FERO Foundation. With the peculiarly British and American manner of involving civil society in a collective struggle, he encouraged investment in cancer research for the benefit of all. In 2010, he accepted the position as head of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, and in 2012 he reached the very peak of the position as head of the largest cancer center in the world at the MSKCC, his second home. In the final step in his long career, Josep made his mark at AstraZeneca, where he transformed their oncology department.

Throughout his career, Josep received numerous international awards as well as recognition in his home country. In 2012 he received the Medal of Honor from the Barcelona City Council, and in 2016, he received the 28th Premi Internacional Catalunya , together with two other Catalan giants of cancer research, Manel Esteller and Joan Massagué.

The Dr. Baselga, Pepe to his friends, strengthened Barcelona’s, reputation by heading up the fight against cancer, drawing attention to cancer research in the city, and fostering cooperation between Barcelona institutions and the best researchers in the world. In addition, he promoted young talent (in particular by means of the FERO grants for young researchers), and championed the belief that it is necessary to work with the best if you wish to achieve excellence.

As an example of the mark he made on Barcelona, it is worth looking at the impact of the FERO Foundation, which he founded in 2001, chaired for 5 years, and led as honorary president for the last 3 years. FERO has provided more than 25 million euros for translational research projects. 37 young talents have been discovered, who are now leading cancer research in our country, and the infrastructure and the necessary environment have been created to involve society in important cancer research. The Foundation has given rise to a community in which everyone who believes in research excellence has a place: patients, families, civil society, researchers, oncologists and all those who believe that today’s research is tomorrow’s medicine.

Though Christmas is always a perfect time to be with family and enjoy the city, this year we will be able to do some of the things that Covid has made impossible for the last two years. We do need to take care as we enjoy Christmas in the city, but we should also take delight in the Christmas spirit that brings us all together. Here are our suggestions:

. Visit a Christmas market: The perfect way to enjoy Christmas with family and friends. The Santa Lucia Marketis a 235-year-old Christmas market whose stalls offer a range of crafts, food, Christmas decorations, and much more. This ancient fair, which was held for the first time in 1786, offers a wide selection of products for nativity scenes and Christmas traditions.

Located in front of the Cathedral of Barcelona, the Santa Lucia market has a total of 170 stalls. For the first time this year there will be more than 20 illuminated Christmas tree to celebrate its 235th anniversary. The market will be held from November 26 to December 23 and will be entirely safe provided one takes the necessary precautions.

If this market is not enough, we encourage you to add a cultural and to the festive season at the Sagrada Familia Christmas fair, which was started when there was no more room at the Santa Lucia market.

The Sagrada Família Christmas fair has been held in front of the Sagrada Familia since the 1960s and features over a hundred stalls selling nativity figures, Christmas trees and plants, ornaments, and gifts. Of course there are places to get churros and hot chocolate or roasted chestnuts as well, along with workshops and family activities available free of charge that fill the neighbourhood with Christmas spirit.

Enjoy the Christmas decorations: Barcelona is full of different places in which to enjoy typical Christmas decorations. A few examples are found below:

Stroll around the streets of Barcelona: Since November 24 this year, the streets of Barcelona have been illuminated with new Christmas decorations. Plaza Catalunya, Calle Aragó and Gran Via all have new designs from the Antoni Arola studio, whose work represents progress, creativity and sustainability.

Plaza de Catalunya is illuminated by a crown of light that symbolises the energy radiating from the city center; Aragó shines with a constellation of stars; and on Gran Via, the former display of typical Christmas phrases has been replaced with an array of lamp shapes symbolizing the comfort of home.

Visit Sant Pau: which will also be putting on its best clothes to bring out the Christmas spirit. Els llums de Sant Pau.

This is why from November 22 to January 9, there will be a magical itinerary at the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site. A pleasant evening awaits you in the circular route around the modernista enclosure. Millions of lights create a bright fairy-tale landscape. Simulating a magical ocean, there are displays of Christmas lights, impressive illuminated plants, and fantasy figures made of light.

Visit the Pedralbes Gardens: Much like Sant Pau, the Pedralbes gardens will be illuminated every night with a million LED lights to provide a magical experience in a natural setting.

Open until January 9, "Nature on fire" is not only a Christmas show; it is also a criticism of environmental degradation such as air pollution and plastic and fire in the oceans, raising visitors’ awareness that these threats still exist at Christmas time.

Visiting monuments and characteristic parts of the city

One of the places you should definitely visit this Christmas is the Port Vell. Started 3 years ago, this unmissable show aims to do its bit to bring about the social, cultural and economic revival of the city. Thanks to Navidad a Buen Puerto more than 85,000 LED lights will turn the Moll de la Fusta into a promenade of light and culture.

Activities that should not be missed include a visit to the Christmas bauble, donations to the food bank in the solidarity container, and a ride on the giant Ferris wheel. The Port Vell Christmas fair will be open until January 5. Make sure not to miss this unusual take on Christmas.

Poble Espanyol, a real-life Advent Calendar: this year, Poble Espanyol is reinventing itself with a creative approach to the festive season that will surprise and delight visitors. Until January 5, the village will become a giant advent calendar, with 24 themed locations relating to typical Christmas figures, traditions and scenes. Bring your Christmas letters with you to give to Santa Claus or the Three Wise Men.

This is a great time to enjoy music in one of the city’s great theaters.

If you are not convinced by any of these suggestions, here is one more. Barcelona is not the only place filled with Christmas magic this year, and since school is out, we suggest a place that the kids will really love:

Christmas at Port Aventura World: Catalonia’s famous theme park will be coloured white, red and green to lend it a festive Christmas atmosphere, while the rides will provide the expected adrenaline rush and taste of adventure. PortAventura World will be filled with lights, decorations, garlands, giant fir trees and sparkling snowflakes, along with shows for all ages, including Christmas World, the Enchanted Forest, Woody’s Christmas and Bubble Magic Christmas.

The aim of Mediterranean Day, which was celebrated for the first time yesterday, is to celebrate Mediterranean culture and diversity and to foment cooperation amongst the countries on its shores.

From the Rock of Gibraltar to the beaches of Beirut, all Mediterranean countries seem to embody a common reality. Although they have diverse histories and widely differing cultures and languages, they do have many aspects in common and are profoundly connected. In fact, for centuries, the peoples and cultures of the region have shared experiences and created links through ideas and trade.

Home to more than 480 million people spread over three continents, the Mediterranean has a coastline of 46,000 km, offering incomparable human and environmental variety.

Three continents, more than 20 countries, many cultures, and a common link: the Mediterranean.

Paradoxically, the sea that separates us is also the sea that unites us, because the Mediterranean Sea has been and continues to be one of the most important geopolitical focal points in history. The Mediterranean has an incomparable array of cultural heritage, a wealth of traditions, and is rich in biodiversity and unique species.

For these reasons and many more, the first Mediterranean Day, a day to recognize culture and cooperation and embrace the diversity of the region, was held yesterday.

More than 50 events and initiatives took place across the region to celebrate the day. Monday’s highlights included a meeting of foreign ministers and a conference on regional integration in Barcelona, which was organized by the regional forum of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Local, national and international events, exhibitions and festivals are held on Mediterranean Day. The aim is to strengthen international ties, foster intercultural dialogue, and embrace our diversity. The Mediterranean is many things: a fascinating territory for some, a source of livelihood for others, and a home for yet others.

But why November 28? It is no coincidence that this date is celebrated as Mediterranean Day, as the event originated on November 28, 1995, when the foreign ministers of the EU and twelve southern and eastern Mediterranean countries held the first Euro-Mediterranean Conference in Barcelona to launch the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Process.

The aim of The Barcelona Process is to develop a new framework for dialogue and to foment a common space for peace, stability, security and socio-economic progress and dialogue. Mediterranean Day serves to remind us to continue moving forward together despite the challenges that may arise.

While it is impossible to define Mediterranean life in just one word, the Union for the Mediterranean has launched a campaign entitled “Mediterranean in 1 word” in order to reflect on our shared identity and origins, and all that unites us as Mediterranean citizens.

Which word would you choose?
