We had spent some summers in our flat in Mallorca and on the way there one winter, had to do a stopover in Barcelona and totally fell in love with the city. It’s a compact city – not a mega city – but with a great lifestyle and wide offer in gastronomy, culture, hobbies and city life.

What aspects of the city would you highlight as positive?

Lifestyle and quality of life. Easy access by walking to all parts of the city, good public transport and mobility solutions makes the city’s services and offer very accessible. Within 30min, you can be in a very nice beach or golfing and in 2h skiing, how convenient! Also compared to some mega cities, very safe – although before Covid-19 there was quite a bit of tourist targeted pickpockets etc.

What aspects of the city must be improved? How?

I have a feeling that Barcelona’s mayor is driving a hippy happy movement, which is all good – but when it means that the streets are flooded with street vendors blocking pavements and at the same time the licensed vendors are suffering, it doesn’t seem fair.

Which are the city’s strengths that will allow it to overcome the COVID-19 crisis?

Barcelona’s attraction has been the Mediterranean lifestyle combined with international talent and business. Luckily all those are still there and even more companies are hiring international talent in Barcelona, thus attracting talent. But for Barcelona to overcome this crisis, it needs to retain them. And that talent in term will find new ways to grow and create activities in the city.

What other challenges do you think the city will face once the health crisis ends?

Tourism industry will take quite some time to recover and it has ripple effect to many other fields as well. I do feel that for the tourism industry this is an opportunity to reinvent itself and start the “Tourism 4.0” movement.

What do you expect from Barcelona in the coming years?

I expect it to be a Mediterranean business friendly talent hub with great cultural offer, services and international level education. Somewhere that will retain the international talent in the city and create new talents as well as invite many more international professionals. For these reasons we are setting up our new company here!

Which city do you feel as «your city»? What do you miss the most?

My father-in-law always reminds me of my words, when I had just been a day or two in Barcelona after we moved, I took him to a roof top terrace and said “look, this is my city”. Freixenet has subsidiaries all over the world and wineries in the best wine-growing areas, including the United States, Mexico, and France.

Gabriele Palma is 56 years old, married, and has two daughters. Born in Brindisi in Southern Italy, he has lived in Rome, Cologne and Barcelona. During his lengthy career in marketing and general management, mainly in multinationals, he has worked in in several fields: the automotive business, advertising, communication, consultancy, and education. He joined SEAT in 2012, and in 2019 he was appointed as General Manager of CASA SEAT. The center opened its doors in June 2020 at the height of the pandemic and is now well-recognized in Barcelona as a cultural center and the go-to place for insights on urban mobility.

Why did you choose Barcelona?

It is difficult to explain in one sentence. My first visit to Barcelona was for work, in 1994, and whenever I came back, I always felt really at home, which must have had something to do with my Southern Italian roots.

What are Barcelona’s strengths?

Barcelona is multifaceted; everyone values it in their own way, appreciating what is most important to them. Industrial facilities and residential areas have been within walking distance of each other for more than a century, generating a model has affected the design of the city and the character of the people who live here

Barcelona’s principal quality is easy to explain: it is a great city to live and work in

In what ways could things be improved?

Like all major cities, Barcelona needs to adapt to the major changes occurring in the world. Climate change, urbanization, technological transition, aging, and the new world economy all pose challenges.

My recipe for Barcelona is to work on its strengths and potential. Its strengths include urban design—the unique combination of Barcelona’s strategic position and its excellent land, sea, and air connections—and the industrial fabric of the Greater Barcelona metropolitan area. And its multiculturalism offers considerable potential. Barcelona is in a position to achieve the same standards as the main European cities, but it needs stronger commitment to opening up.

What do you think will help the city to overcome the Covid-19 crisis?

Barcelona has an international outlook, which means that it is able to attract high levels of investment.

If both public and private sectors can work together to attract major international investors and professionals, Barcelona has the chance to position itself as a key player in various strategic sectors.

What challenges do you think Barcelona will face once the health crisis is over?

I see three major challenges. The first is to establish which economic sectors have suffered most and need urgent measures. The second is to clarify the city’s identity; the current Barcelona «brand» owes much to the work done since the ’92 Olympic Games, but it needs to be updated, while not losing sight of its unique identity, the quality of life of citizens, and respect for the environment. The third challenge is to address the new post-Covid scenario.

All three are very urgent. The decisions taken at the beginning of the recovery will set the tone for a long economic cycle.

What are your hopes for Barcelona in the coming years?

I think the city needs to open up internationally and value diversity in all its facets. This is an asset that Barcelona already has, but it needs to embrace it more fully.

Which city do you consider to be your city? What do you miss most?

My connection with cities is to do with the people, and the people I am closest to today live in Barcelona. I feel at home here, although I do I miss other special people from the many places I have lived.

Read the interview in El Periódico.

If you want to know the latest English news about Barcelona and the people who bring it to life, sign up to our Blog.

El Periódico

La entrada Gabriele Palma: «Barcelona has an international outlook» se publicó primero en Barcelona Global Blog.

Thomas Scholl: “Barcelona must open its doors to the world again”

@BarcelonaGlobal

Barcelonians by Choice

Barcelona

Ciudad Global

Ciudad renovable

Emprendimiento

Industria

Internacional

Inversión

Leissure

Sostenibilidad

Talento

traditions

Turismo

Ventas

La entrada Thomas Scholl: “Barcelona must open its doors to the world again” se publicó primero en Barcelona Global Blog.

Thomas Scholl has been based in Barcelona in August 2018. class="vc_column-inner">

Part-Argentine, part-French, Francisco Villamayor is 44 years old and married with three children. Until he moved to Barcelona a year and a half ago, he had lived all his life in Buenos Aires. In 2011 he founded Bresson Realty & lifestyle in Buenos Aires, a high-end boutique property agency that today boasts 40 agents and 250 of the most exclusive properties in the city. In 2017, he opened the first real estate Concept Store in Argentina in which his offices share space with an art gallery open to the public, a restaurant, and an events room. He is, currently, in the process of opening the first Concept Store in Barcelona and training the Bresson Realty Barcelona sales teams. He is also an amateur artist and lover of architecture.

Why did you choose Barcelona?

My eldest daughter wanted to study in Europe and my wife, who had grown up in Mallorca, missed the Mediterranean. The company was also ready to go international and I had long dreamed of the challenge. Barcelona was the perfect location for the family’s goals and the perfect place to develop the Bresson brand and style.

What do you see as the city’s strengths?

My company sells high-end properties so it is impressive to see the quantity, diversity and good taste of properties in Barcelona. The city encourages entrepreneurs and the Barcelona lifestyle is ideal for a business. That is all about the synergies between the properties and the lifestyle of the city. I would also point out the Catalan entrepreneurial ecosystem’s commitment to digitalization is a benchmark in this respect. As businesses need ground-breaking technology, there is nothing better than being in a city that is thoroughly up to date and already working on its future.

What needs to be improved? How?

The marvels of the historic center of Barcelona, and other local towns are not equaled by the buildings on the outskirts. There are numerous buildings and villas from the 80s or 90s that were built more out of economic than architectural criteria. And in the months in which I have been looking for a place to build my own house. I have personal experience of existing bureaucratic limitations.

Many of my friends have given up the idea of building, which is sad, as most of them dreamed of creating signature avant-garde buildings. The type of buildings that have made Barcelona the city we love. I would also add that there need to be changes to tax laws to help Barcelona become more competitive and develop its full potential.

What do you think will help the city to overcome the Covid-19 crisis?

The wide range of people living in Barcelona, will come up with a wide range of solutions. The hard-working attitude of the Catalans is bound to give direction and the city’s privileged location will attract new businesses that are likely to head the field in the decade to come.

What challenges does the city face now that the Covid emergency appears to be abating.

The biggest challenges are to motivate ourselves again, change our thinking, plan ahead, reestablish faith in ourselves and undertake new projects. Many people have been badly affected by their personal or financial losses and will need to get back on their feet again in order to face a new, uncertain and different reality. It has been really tough, but the main challenge now is psychological.

What are your expectations of Barcelona in the coming years?

I am what Barcelona Global calls a «Barcelonian by choice». I expect the city and the region to allow me to develop my ideas, dreams and projects because they offer innovation, work and growth. Entrepreneurs offer a win-win situation in places in which we invest our time, ideas and money.

Which town do you think of as your own? What do you miss the most?

I am a «porteño» (the name for a person from Buenos Aires), but if you take the word literally (someone who lives in a port), I could also be from Barcelona, right?

I don’t tend to look back. I share Jorge Luis Borges’ quote that «You don’t need to be with friends all the time.» Besides, new technologies allow me to keep in touch with my loved ones and with my company teams in Argentina. What I miss most is my childhood, but since I can never go back there, I focus on the future. And today, my future is by the Mediterranean Sea, where I now have new friendships that I hope will last forever.

Read the interview in El Periódico.

If you want to know the latest English news about Barcelona and the people who bring it to life, sign up to our Blog.

El Periódico

La entrada Francisco Villamayor: Barcelona is very welcoming to entrepreneurs se publicó primero en Barcelona Global Blog.
